Gmail, an email service provided by Google, is now available in Irish.
European-based technology giant Dublin, has teamed up with Google Ireland employees, Gaelgoirí and a small group of Irish professionals and enthusiasts to provide 'Gaeilge' services.
Laura Brassil, from Google's Dublin localization team, said the project is a global effort with teams in California, Switzerland and Dublin working with Irish language experts.
"We have the confidence of local googlers and volunteers to translate more than 60,000 words and phrases into Irish." I would like to introduce a 'buíochas' to Professor Kevin Scannell of St Louis University, Missouri. and Irish language enthusiasts because of their commitment to Gmail as Gaeilge, "she said.
Gmail is available in 71 different languages and over 425 million active users worldwide.
Conradh na Gaeilge applauded this move. "We have been looking for this service in Bliain na Gaeilge in 2013, and we would like to commend Google for providing this service very quickly," said Secretary-General Julian De Spáinn.
"All the volunteers who participated in the service could be worthy of praise and the Irish language community would like to use the service!"
